Brief description Obverse: Triptych portraits of various ethnic groups and nationalities of Eritrea (children on 1 Nakfa; a boy, a young man, and an elderly man on 5 Nakfa; three young women on 10 Nakfa) in the center, national flag-raising scene on the left. Lettering: "STATE OF ERITREA", currency name in three scripts (Ge'ez "ናቕፋ", Arabic "نقفة", and Latin), and respective denominations.

Reverse: Social life, nature, and infrastructure of Eritrea: children studying in a bush school (1 Nakfa), cattle resting under the Ficus Daaro sycamore tree in Segheneyti (5 Nakfa), train crossing a viaduct over the Dogali River (10 Nakfa).
