Brief description The design of this banknote honors Saint Ivan of Rila (St. Ivan Rilski), the most revered patron saint and heavenly protector of the Bulgarian nation, and the founder of the famous Rila Monastery. Representing the lowest denomination of the fourth lev series introduced after the monetary stabilization, this 1 Lev note marks a key milestone in modern Bulgarian currency history. The dimensions of the note are 112 x 60 mm. This paper issue circulated alongside a coin of the same value before being officially demonetized at the end of December 2015, when it was fully replaced by coinage.

Obverse: The front features a dark red and dark blue print over an orange underprint, showcasing an icon of St. Ivan Rilski (876–946) painted in the late 18th century (originally from the Assumption Church near the Rila Monastery). The left side is enhanced by a protective hologram stripe containing rhomboid graphic elements. All inscriptions are in Cyrillic, displaying the saint's name, the denomination “Един Лев” (One Lev), and the central bank's title. The serial numbers are printed in black.

Reverse: The back displays a vibrant red print over an orange underprint, illustrating the main church of the Rila Monastery—the largest and most famous Eastern Orthodox monastery in Bulgaria. The layout is completed by the nominal value, the issuing authority's name, and the standard legal warning against counterfeiting.

Security Features & Substrate: Produced on security paper by the Printing Works of the Bulgarian National Bank in Sofia. Its protective elements consist of a watermark depicting a rampant lion (the traditional heraldic symbol of Bulgaria), a vertical holographic stripe, and the official signatures of Governor Svetoslav Gavriyski and Chief Cashier Lyuben Ivanov.
