Brief description The design of this banknote is dedicated to the philosophical and educational legacy of the Joseon Dynasty. The visual layout integrates the portrait of a prominent Korean Neo-Confucian scholar, historical traditional educational institutions, and classical landscape painting.

Obverse: The central focal point features a portrait of Yi Hwang (Toegye), one of the most eminent Korean philosophers. Positioned next to the portrait is Myeongryundang, the main lecture hall of Seonggyungwan, the historic supreme educational institution founded during the Joseon Dynasty. The composition also includes blooming flowers of the Korean Green Plum (Prunus mume), a plant deeply admired by the scholar for its resilience.

Reverse: The back is adorned with a reproduction of the famous classical painting Gyesangjeonggeodo (attributed to the master painter Jeong Seon). The artwork illustrates Yi Hwang studying and writing within his private academy, Dosan Seowon, nestled among serene mountainous landscapes.

Watermark: A localized portrait of Yi Hwang accompanied by a sharp electrotype rendering of the denomination.

Topical Collecting Themes: Scholars, philosophers, and thinkers (Yi Hwang), Confucianism and academic heritage, fine arts and classical painting on currency (Gyesangjeonggeodo), traditional architecture and historic schools (Seonggyungwan, Dosan Seowon), botanical themes (plum blossoms), banknotes of East Asia.
