Brief description The visual style of this banknote directly reflects the state ideology and monumental architecture of North Korea. Issued within the second won series during the Democratic People's Republic era, this 500 Won note is a prominent example of local currency design. The dimensions of the note are 156 x 75 mm. This paper denomination circulated across the country before being officially demonetized at the end of December 2009 during a restrictive national monetary reform. All text elements use the native Korean script (Hangul).

Obverse: The front features the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun, the grand memorial complex and mausoleum of the state's founder, Kim Il-sung, located in Pyongyang. The architectural view is framed by detailed depictions of Siebold's Magnolia (Magnolia sieboldii) blossoms, which serve as the official national flower of North Korea. The text includes the name of the Central Bank of the DPRK, the denomination, and the issuance year dated by the official Juche calendar format ("Juche 87").

Reverse: The back focuses on the modern engineering achievements of the capital city, displaying the historic Chongryu Bridge. This prominent cable-stayed suspension bridge spans the Taedong River in Pyongyang. The clean design layout repeats the official title of the central bank along with prominent numeric representations of the 500 Won value.

Security Features & Substrate: Produced on security paper by the state printing works of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. The protective properties follow standard domestic printing techniques of the era, utilizing a customized localized watermark embedded into the paper substrate along with security fibers.

Topical Collecting Themes: State mausoleums and memorial palaces (Kumsusan), socialist and totalitarian architecture, botanical specimens and national flowers (Siebold's Magnolia), civil engineering and bridges (Chongryu Bridge), historic rivers (Taedong River), the Juche calendar and era dating, historical currency replaced by reforms, the second North Korean won series.
