Brief description The visual design of this classic French banknote is distinguished by its exceptional artistic expression, rich palette, and profound symbolism celebrating the nation's history, culture, and agricultural roots. Printed using the letterpress technique, this note spans the transition from the Third Republic to the French State and has been completely demonetized. The dimensions of the note are 180 x 92 mm.

Obverse: On the left features the bust of a woman crowned with laurels symbolizing France. On the right, a child is depicted holding a medallion framed by elegant bunches of grapes. In the background unfolds a detailed aerial view of Paris, centered on the historic Île de la Cité. The top bears the inscription “BANQUE DE FRANCE” alongside the numeral “100”, with the denomination stated in words across the center as “CENT FRANCS”. The composition was designed by Lucien Hector Jonas and engraved by Ernest Deloche.

Reverse: Prominently displays the bust of Sully (Maximilien de Béthune, Duke of Sully), the influential French statesman and minister under King Henry IV, facing left and holding a parchment inscribed in old French. The background features the majestic Castle of Sully-sur-Loire (Château de Sully-sur-Loire) and a pastoral countryside landscape filled with various animals. The bottom highlights his legendary maxim: “LABOURAGE ET PASTOURAGE SONT LES DEUX MAMELLES DE LA FRANCE” (“Plowing and pasturage are the two breasts of France”). The center includes the detailed legal warning of Article 139 of the Penal Code, punishing counterfeiting with forced labor.

Security Features & Substrate: The note is printed on the characteristically thin, high-grade French paper substrate without an embedded security thread. Its primary defense is a highly detailed, local multi-tone watermark designed by Henri Bellery-Desfontaines, depicting the profile heads of Ceres (goddess of agriculture) and Mercury (god of commerce) facing left. The note carries the signatures of General Secretary René Favre-Gilly and General Cashier Pierre Rousseau.

Topical Collecting Themes: Prominent historical figures and statesmen on currency (Duke of Sully), castles, fortresses, and châteaux of the Loire Valley (Sully-sur-Loire), cityscapes and urban panoramas (Paris, Île de la Cité), allegorical representations and personifications of nations (symbol of France), agriculture, viticulture, and pastoral themes, masterpieces by designers Lucien Jonas and engraver Ernest Deloche.
