Brief description The design of this banknote is entirely dedicated to Vasil Levski, the national hero, revolutionary, and strategist who fought for Bulgaria's liberation from Ottoman rule. Issued in the mid-1990s under the third lev series, this 1000 Leva note reflects a turbulent economic era defined by high inflation. The dimensions of the note are 144 x 74 mm. This specific currency type was officially demonetized on December 31, 1999, following the structural monetary stabilization and denomination that introduced the fourth lev series.

Obverse: The left side displays a detailed portrait of Vasil Levski (1837–1873). Adjacent to his portrait is one of his most famous inspirational quotes: "If I shall win, I shall win for the entire people. If I shall lose, I shall lose only myself." To the right, the layout features the famous lithograph "Liberated Bulgaria" by the prominent Bulgarian artist Georgi Danchov. Designed by Kiril Gogov, all inscriptions are executed in Cyrillic, naming the central bank and the hero.

Reverse: The back illustrates the historic Monument to Vasil Levski located in the center of Sofia. Positioned on the right side is a symbolic depiction of a gun, a knife, and a Christian cross resting on top of a book (the Gospel). These items were essential components of the secret initiation ritual of the Internal Revolutionary Organisation (IRO) founded by Levski, where members took a strict oath of allegiance. The background text shows the facsimile of Levski's written oath signed in Bucharest. The standard warning regarding counterfeit penalties is also printed at the bottom.

Security Features & Substrate: Printed on premium security paper by the renowned German manufacturer Giesecke+Devrient in Leipzig. The protective elements include a distinct local watermark showcasing the portrait of Vasil Levski, alongside the official signatures of the Governor (Todor Valchev or Svetoslav Gavriyski) and Chief Cashier Lyuben Ivanov.

Topical Collecting Themes: National heroes and liberation history, revolutionary movements, monuments and architecture, classical art and lithographs, religious iconography and Bibles, weapons on currency (guns and daggers), banknotes printed in Germany (Giesecke+Devrient), hyperinflation and demonetized issues of the third lev, portrait watermarks.
