Brief description The visual design of this high-denomination banknote reflects a turbulent period of hyperinflation in Bulgaria during the late 1990s, which required the issuance of larger face values. Released as part of the Republic of Bulgaria's issues for the third lev, this 10,000 Leva note honors the country's artistic elite. The dimensions of the note are 167 x 80 mm. Due to rapid economic reforms, its circulation was relatively short, and it was officially demonetized on December 31, 1999, following the currency denomination and the introduction of the fourth lev.

Obverse: The front of the banknote is entirely dedicated to Vladimir Dimitrov-Maystora (The Master), one of the most prominent and distinct Bulgarian painters of the 20th century. A self-portrait of the artist is positioned on the left alongside his lifespans (1882–1960). The background features an architectural underprint of the National Academy of Arts building in Sofia, where he studied. The Cyrillic inscriptions state the issuer's name, “Българска Народна Банка” (Bulgarian National Bank), and the denomination written out as “Десет Хиляди Лева” (Ten Thousand Leva). The note was designed by Kiril Gogov.

Reverse: The reverse celebrates the unique creative legacy and contribution of the painter to world art. It displays a collage of fragments taken from his famous artworks, which heavily featured rural life, Bulgarian women in folk settings, and expressive colors. The inscriptions, written in Cyrillic, name the issuer as the “Българска Народна Банка” and repeat the denomination “Десет Хиляди Лева.” A standard legal warning states that counterfeiters will be punished according to the law.

Security Features & Substrate: Manufactured on high-quality security paper by the renowned German printer Giesecke+Devrient in Leipzig. Reflecting its high face value at the time, the security features include a modern hologram stripe displaying the bank's Cyrillic initials “БНБ,” the signatures of Governor Lyubomir Filipov and Chief Cashier Lyuben Ivanov, and a localized portrait watermark of Vladimir Dimitrov-Maystora.

Topical Collecting Themes: History and economic reforms of Bulgaria (1990s hyperinflation era), world art and famous painters on currency (Vladimir Dimitrov-Maystora), fine art, paintings and creative collages, architecture and educational institutions (National Academy of Arts), hologram stripes on paper money, portrait watermarks, banknotes manufactured in Germany (Giesecke+Devrient), demonetized high-denomination banknotes.
