Brief description The design of this banknote honors Saint Paisius of Hilendar (Paisiy Hilendarski), a key Bulgarian enlightener, the first major figure of the Bulgarian National Revival, and the author of the landmark "Istoriya Slavyanobolgarskaya". Issued within the fourth lev series during the Republic era, this 2 Leva note is an important historical issue. The dimensions of the note are 116 x 64 mm. This paper denomination circulated concurrently with the later-issued coin of the same value before being officially demonetized at the end of December 2020, completely yielding to metal coinage.

Obverse: The front features a portrait of Paisius of Hilendar (1722–1773). The detailed background depicts the Zografou Monastery on Mount Athos, the official monastery seal, and a historical representation of the interior of Paisius' monastic cell where his chronicle was compiled. All text is in Cyrillic, showing the denomination “Два Лева” (Two Leva), the central bank's name, and the lifespans of the historic figure. The note was designed by Kiril Gogov.

Reverse: The back displays a detailed facsimile of the Zografou draft of the "Historiae Sclavo-Bulgaricus" containing a chronological list of Bulgarian rulers. The layout is rich with medieval Bulgarian heraldry, including images of Tsar Kaloyan’s ring seal, three seals belonging to sovereigns Mihail Shishman, Svetoslav Terter, and Ivan Asen II, Hristofor Zhefarovich's crowned rampant lion, and the historical Coat of Arms of Bulgaria featuring three lions as published in the Gruenberg Heraldic Compendium.

Security Features & Substrate: Produced on security paper by the Printing Works of the Bulgarian National Bank in Sofia. Its protective features include a watermark showing a rampant heraldic lion and carrying the official signatures of either Governor Svetoslav Gavriyski or Ivan Iskrov, and Chief Cashier Lyuben Ivanov or Stefan Tzvetkov, depending on the specific release series.

Topical Collecting Themes: Prominent historians and enlighteners, monks and religious figures, monasteries and holy sites (Mount Athos, Zografou), ancient manuscripts and books, medieval monarchs and seals (Tsar Kaloyan, Ivan Asen II), heraldry (crowned lions, early coats of arms), banknotes printed in Bulgaria (Sofia), paper currency replaced by coins, the fourth lev series.
