Brief description The visual design of this large-format historical banknote reflects the classic Soviet and socialist design aesthetics of the post-war era. Issued as part of the 1951 Series for the second lev of the People's Republic of Bulgaria, this 200 Leva note tells a story of economic transformation. The dimensions of the note are 175 x 90 mm. It circulated until March 31, 1962, when it was officially demonetized.

Obverse: The note features an asymmetrical layout. On the left side is a prominent portrait of Georgi Dimitrov, the prominent communist leader of Bulgaria. On the right, a stylized vignette frames the official Coat of Arms of the People's Republic of Bulgaria. The Cyrillic inscriptions state the country's name, “Народна Република България” (People's Republic of Bulgaria), and the denomination written out as “Двеста Лева” (Two Hundred Leva). The wider white margin on the left includes a shield framing the numeral “200.”

Reverse: The reverse turns its focus toward socialist labor and agricultural heritage, depicting a classic genre scene of female tobacco-pickers at work in the fields. The inscriptions, written in Cyrillic, name the issuer as the “Българска Народна Банка” (Bulgarian National Bank) and repeat the denomination “Двеста Лева.” Additional text states that the banknote is backed by precious metals and all the bank's assets, alongside a standard legal warning that counterfeiters will be punished according to the law.

Security Features & Substrate: Printed on high-quality security paper by the famous Soviet printer Goznak. The most notable anti-counterfeiting security feature is a localized watermark highly symbolic of the era, depicting two hands holding a sickle and a hammer.

Topical Collecting Themes: History and monetary reforms of Bulgaria, socialist and communist leaders (Georgi Dimitrov), state heraldry and coats of arms, agricultural themes and socialist labor (tobacco-pickers at work), sickle and hammer motifs (watermarks), banknotes manufactured by Goznak, large-format currency (over 170 mm), demonetized and historical banknotes.
