Brief description The visual design of this banknote reflects the beginning of a new historical era—the transition to a democratic state and the revival of traditional national symbols. Issued as part of the post-communist issues for the third lev of the Republic of Bulgaria, this 200 Leva note moves away from socialist realism toward cultural heritage. The dimensions of the note are 137 x 68 mm. It circulated until December 31, 1999, when it was officially demonetized following the currency denomination and the introduction of the fourth lev.

Obverse: The front of the banknote is dedicated to Ivan Vazov, a prominent poet, novelist, and playwright, often referred to as the "Patriarch of Bulgarian Literature." His portrait is positioned on the left side alongside his lifespans (1850–1921). A picturesque Bulgarian village serves as the underprint background, capturing the rural atmosphere often praised in his poems. The Cyrillic inscriptions state the issuer's name, “Българска Народна Банка” (Bulgarian National Bank), and the denomination written out as “Двеста Лева” (Two Hundred Leva). The note was designed by Antonii Ivanov.

Reverse: The reverse celebrates the literary legacy of Bulgaria and the high recognition of the poet's work. The central imagery features a classic lyre combined with a laurel wreath, representing the grand literary prize bestowed upon Ivan Vazov in 1895. The inscriptions, written in Cyrillic, name the issuer as the “Българска Народна Банка” and repeat the denomination “Двеста Лева.” A standard legal warning states that counterfeiters will be punished according to the law.

Security Features & Substrate: Manufactured on high-quality security paper by the famous German printing works Wertpapierdruckerei in Leipzig. The note features a safety strip readable under backlight, the signatures of Governor Todor Valchev and Chief Cashier Lyuben Ivanov, and a distinctive watermark depicting a rampant heraldic lion—a symbol deeply rooted in Bulgarian statehood.

Topical Collecting Themes: Modern history and monetary reforms of Bulgaria (early post-socialist Republic issues), world literature, famous poets and writers on currency (Ivan Vazov), musical instruments (the lyre), laurel wreaths and cultural awards, heraldic rampant lions (watermarks), banknotes manufactured in Germany (Leipzig), demonetized and historical banknotes.
