Brief description The design of this paper 5 Pounds sterling banknote (a variant of Series E) honors prominent British historical figures and the legacy of social reform. This issue is notable for being the final paper five-pound note issued by the Bank of England before the transition to polymer substrates.

Obverse: The right side features a formal portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, while the left showcases a security hologram depicting Britannia, the female personification of the nation. The inscriptions are rendered in Latin script and elegant cursive, displaying the central banking promise: «Bank of England / I PROMISE TO PAY THE BEARER ON DEMAND THE SUM OF / FIVE / Pounds», alongside the city of issuance «London», the authority line «For the Govr. and Compa. of the BANK of ENGLAND», and the royal cypher «EIIR». The serial numbers are printed in dual-color schemes: red/green and blue. The visual theme uses a blend of brown and green hues over a multicolored underprint.

Reverse: The reverse side highlights a portrait and facsimile signature of Elizabeth Fry («Eliz-th Fry 1780-1845»), the celebrated English social reformer known for her pioneering work in prison welfare. The vignette on the left captures a historical scene showing women and children inside a workhouse (Newgate Prison). The issuing house title «BANK of ENGLAND» and the denomination «FIVE Pounds» flank the design elements.

Security Features & Watermark: The anti-counterfeiting array includes a traditional watermark of Queen Elizabeth II, an embedded security thread, and a reflective Britannia hologram on the front. Ultraviolet (UV) fluorescent activity is present on the obverse side only. The note was designed by Chief Designer Andrew Ward and artist Debbie Marriott.
