The Czech National Bank issued a new commemorative 100 koruna banknote to mark the centenary of the start of operations of the National Bank of Czechoslovakia. This banknote symbolically links the historical roots of independent central banking with its eternal values – independence, expertise, and responsibility for price stability. It is the third and final in a series dedicated to the origin of the Czechoslovak koruna.

Banknote Design

The banknote is dedicated to the period of the creation of the Czechoslovak currency and honors Vilém Pospíšil, the first governor of the National Bank of Czechoslovakia. The design was created by artist Eva Hašková. The obverse features a portrait of Vilém Pospíšil, complemented by a motif of the Czech National Bank building in Prague, a cornucopia with fruit, the medium coat of arms of the Czechoslovak Republic, and a genius with a laurel wreath.

The reverse shows a corner of the former Městská spořitelna Pražská savings bank, a figure of a genius with a beehive, and a fruit composition. The banknote was printed by the State Printing Works of Securities, and the SPARK® Flow element was manufactured in Switzerland. The face value of the banknote is not its selling price.

Security Features

The banknote is protected by a range of security elements, including two types of watermarks, a security thread, microtext, and a latent image. A new feature is the use of SPARK® Flow technology for printing the denomination 100, which creates the impression of smooth color movement when the banknote is tilted.

Availability and Mintage

The total mintage is 20,000 banknotes, available for purchase through contractual partners for the sale of numismatic materials of the Czech National Bank.

Significance of the Anniversary

This year marks 100 years since the start of operations of the National Bank of Czechoslovakia. In addition to issuing the banknote, the Czech National Bank opened a new exhibition dedicated to Alois Rašín and the history of the first independent Czechoslovak central bank.
