The Central Bank of Samoa (Faletupe Tutotonu o Samoa) announced the commencement of issuing 50 and 100 Tālā banknotes printed on a polymer substrate. These two banknotes complete the series of plastic circulating currency, the issuance of which began in 2023. The 2025 emission is a reissue of the 2008 design banknotes with the addition of security features characteristic of plastic notes.
The official launch of the new banknotes began on December 8, 2025. The design of the banknotes retains the existing elements, adapted for the polymer material. Among the updates is a transparent window featuring the image of a plant, which enhances the level of protection against counterfeiting. Tactile markers in the form of raised dots, which protrude above the surface, have also appeared on the banknotes. These elements facilitate denomination recognition for people with visual impairments.
The banknotes are signed by the current Governor of the Bank, Maiava Atalina Emma Ainuu-Enari, and the former Minister of Finance of Samoa, Lautimuia Afoa Uelese Vaʻai. The latter held the position until September 2025.
Polymer banknotes ensure higher durability, security, and quality compared to paper ones. They have an extended lifespan, which reduces replacement costs, and contribute to environmental benefits: less waste, lower carbon emissions, and the possibility of recycling. New security elements facilitate authentication and machine processing.
Paper banknotes of 50 and 100 Tālā from previous issues retain their legal tender status. They will circulate in parallel with the new polymer notes. The Central Bank plans to gradually withdraw paper banknotes from circulation through the natural replacement process.
This emission is part of Samoa's monetary system modernization strategy, initiated in 2023. Polymer banknotes first appeared in the country with the issuance of smaller denominations, and now the series is completed with a full range of circulating currency.
