I. Introduction and Renewal Context
The National Bank of Kazakhstan continues the renewal of its currency series, introducing new banknotes inspired by the country's ancient heritage. The "Saka" style family of banknotes was unveiled, which is gradually being introduced into circulation. These designs reflect nomadic culture and modern Kazakhstan, based on elements of Saka art. Previous issues will circulate in parallel with the new ones for at least a year, after which the older notes will be gradually withdrawn.
II. Design and Symbolism
The new 1000 Tenge banknote (B156a) is designed in yellow, brown, orange, and blue tones. The size is 130 x 70 mm, and the material is paper. It emphasizes cultural identity through unique motifs.
-
Obverse (Vertical Orientation): Kazakh text, "Saka" style ornaments with Varifeye ColorChange – a patch that changes colour from blue to gold. The central element is the "Tree of Life" with a branch of the sacred wreath and a soaring bird from the headdress of the "Golden Man" (3rd–4th centuries BC), found in the Issyk kurgan. The DNA spiral and the national emblem are also depicted, symbolizing heritage and progress.
-
Reverse: Kazakh text, schematic hill slopes in the form of an infinity ornament, and a gold ornament. The central figures are a resting Central Asian Shepherd Dog and a standing Tazy sighthound. A round Kazakh symbol complements the composition, emphasizing the unity of nature and culture.
III. Security Features and Manufacturing
The banknote is equipped with modern security technologies to prevent counterfeiting. It includes a windowed non-metallic stripe with a demetallized inscription "1000" (twice). The watermark is an electrotype "1000". It was manufactured at the British Branch of the National Bank of Kazakhstan (BFoNBK).
IV. Significance for Kazakhstan
The introduction of this banknote is a step towards strengthening the protection of the Tenge and popularizing historical heritage. The "Saka" series combines the traditions of nomads with innovation, making the currency not only a means of payment but also a cultural artifact. Older issues will remain in circulation, ensuring a smooth transition.
