UAE Central Bank Unveils New Dh100 Banknote Ahead of Eid Al-Fitr
Just before the celebration of Eid Al-Fitr, one of the most significant Muslim holidays, the Central Bank of the United Arab Emirates (CBUAE) announced the release of a new 100-dirham banknote. This event is part of the ambitious Third Issuance of the National Currency Project, showcasing the country’s commitment to blending its rich history with cutting-edge technologies of the future. Made of polymer, the new banknote entered circulation on March 24, 2025, and will coexist alongside the existing notes of the same denomination.
A Design Reflecting Heritage and Progress
The new banknote stands out with its unique design, symbolizing the UAE’s cultural legacy and forward-looking aspirations. The front features the Umm Al Quwain National Fort, a historical landmark representing the strength and traditions of the emirate. The reverse side showcases the Port of Fujairah, a key economic hub, alongside a nod to the Etihad Rail network. This railway project, connecting the seven emirates and extending to Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, embodies infrastructural progress and regional unity.
The color scheme revolves around shades of red, consistent with the traditional design of the 100-dirham denomination, ensuring easy recognition for the public. According to Khaled Mohamed Balama, Governor of the CBUAE, the banknote’s design reflects not only historical heritage but also a commitment to sustainable development and financial competitiveness. “This release is our gift for Eid Al-Fitr, highlighting the unity of tradition and progress,” he stated.
Innovation and Security
Special attention was given to security and usability in the banknote’s creation. Its polymer material makes it more durable than paper counterparts, with a lifespan at least twice as long. The CBUAE has equipped the note with advanced security features to prevent counterfeiting. For visually impaired individuals, prominent Braille symbols have been added to identify the denomination easily, demonstrating the bank’s inclusive approach to all users.
All banks, exchange offices, and financial institutions have been instructed to update their ATMs and cash-counting devices to accommodate the new banknote. This ensures seamless use alongside existing paper and polymer notes, which remain legally valid.
Digital Dirham and the Future of Finance
In parallel with the new banknote’s release, the UAE Central Bank is advancing its digital transformation efforts. Recently, a new symbol for the dirham was introduced—a stylized “D” with two horizontal lines symbolizing stability and inspired by the UAE flag’s colors. This symbol will represent the currency in both physical and digital forms.
The Digital Dirham, developed under the Financial Infrastructure Transformation (FIT) program, is set to launch for the retail sector by late 2025. Built on blockchain technology, it promises to reduce transaction costs, enhance data security, and promote financial inclusion. This initiative includes asset tokenization, smart contracts, and an integrated digital payment platform with a wallet for seamless transactions—from retail purchases to cross-border transfers.
“The Digital Dirham and the new currency symbol mark a step toward an innovative financial ecosystem, reinforcing the UAE’s position as a global leader,” emphasized Khaled Mohamed Balama. He added that these projects enhance operational efficiency, combat financial crime, and expand access to international markets.
Awards and Recognition
It’s worth noting that the UAE Central Bank has already earned international acclaim for its innovations in banknote design. In 2023 and 2025, its 500- and 1,000-dirham polymer banknotes won the “Best New Banknote” award at the High-Security Printing EMEA conference, affirming the high standards of technology and design applied to Emirati currency.
Conclusion
The release of the new 100-dirham banknote is not just a practical update to the currency but also a symbolic gesture ahead of Eid Al-Fitr. By blending traditional design elements with state-of-the-art technology, it reflects the spirit of the United Arab Emirates—a nation that honors its past while confidently embracing the future. Alongside digital initiatives like the Digital Dirham, the UAE continues to solidify its status as a global financial and technological hub.
